Our whole reality is based on our beliefs and perceptions, not entirely facts. Most ideas come from experiences, beliefs and opinions. So often, that sometimes we may view opinions and judgements as facts. But, we’re all having our own experience of the world so how do we know what’s the difference between the truth, and opinion?
FACT VS. OPINION
What makes it Fact?
A fact would be considered something that is measurable or that has always been true. Ie, 1+1=2. That is a fact, by science and mathematical laws of our Universe.
What makes it an opinion?
Somebody’s view, or personal map of the world that isn’t based off of a fact. Ie, Kids need to grow up with a Mom and a Dad. That may be somebody’s opinion, but that doesn’t make it true for everyone.
We create stories.
Our brains look at our past, and study it to try and make sense of our experiences to create our future. Your brain will look at everything that has happened, and based on those experiences, create stories in your head. As humans, we tell ourselves how we view the world based on our life experiences. Unfortunately, sometimes our stories can hinder our growth and ability to try new things and experience growth and development.
The stories we create about ourselves and our abilities is based on our brains assessments. This disconnect between opinion and fact shapes who we become. We might only take on challenges we feel fully equipped to handle based on our experiences so far.
At one point in your life, you may have wanted to achieve some sort of goal, or dream. For example, trying out for a sports team. Maybe at that time in your life, it didn’t turn out the way you had planned. You didn’t make the team.
So, you began to tell yourself this story “I’m not good at sports”
But perhaps, the fact maybe they had too many people for the team... Maybe you were too busy to train as hard as some the other participants... Maybe you weren’t ready to be on a sports team yet.
If you grew up experiencing repeated struggles in sport/ physical related challenges without positive support from others, it may reinforce your opinion that you are not talented at them.
But, it isn’t a fact. It still; just an opinion. Opinions can be changed.
Now, in your current age, have you ever found yourself telling yourself “I’m just not good at that” or “I’ve never been able to do ____, so why even try?” [That's your brain talking]
It is just a story that you’ve been telling yourself. It doesn’t necessarily make it true.
The great thing about stories, is that we can rewrite them. Once we understand that there’s a difference between our opinions and the actual facts of the world, we can recognize that the only thing that is stopping us is ourselves. We might allow our opinions about ourselves and the world to limit our potential.
The key to success is creating a new story, and the first step in that process is deconstructing your story.
So now, I want you to consider if you have been living your life off of your own stories, or facts...
Use this worksheet to create yourself a new story.
